The first nine holes of the projected 27 at Santa María Golf were designed and opened in 1991. The second nine scheduled to open in October 1996 were devised by the clu´s technical team. Santa María traces the contours of two valleys in which the natural vegetation, streams and four lakes form natural hazards. The first nine holes are shorter and more complicated than the back nine which are flatter and have wider fairways. Greens are generally spacious. Amongst the most spectacular holes are the 17th where the green is surrounded by bunkers, and the 11th with a lake and waterfall bordering the green. For those in needed of extra tuition the Diego Morito Golf School has one of the best reputations on the coast. Santa María has a magnificent clubhouse, tennis courts, swimming pool and its own lawn bowls rink and club.

Majestically overlooking Marbell´s Golf Valley the pioneering La Quinta development and course, designed by Antonio García Garrido and Manuel Piñero, is unforgivingly up and down and demands accuracy and stamina. Most tees are elevated affording excellent visibility and fairways widen to receive good tee shots, but beware of trees, water and large yet shallow fairway bunkers. More fearsome deeper bunkers lie in wait for stray approach shots. The long 15th, a dogleg left, is rated the most difficult hole. Look out for the Piñero brothers who may offer a little local knowledge and advice. The succes story of the 199´s La Quinta has already built a further 9 holes, and replaced the 2nd, 3rd and 5th with holes providing a fairer, less taxing test of golf. The clu´s well - appointed clubhouse houses the internationally famous Restaurante La Dorada.

Strength and strategy are the keynotes to successfully negotiating the oldest course on the coast. Inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925 it was designed by Scottish architect Tom Simpson, of Turnberry and Muirfield renown. In 1992 the Royal Club de Campo hosted the inaugural Turespaña Masters Open de Andalucía won by Vijay Singh. State owned and run in conjunction with the adjoining Parador the club is part links, with natural lagoons formed by sea water and part parkland where the holes form avenues between stands of trees which are home to flocks of colourful parakeets. Although the course is flat with wide fairways the trees make things more difficult. The 12th is a good example of lurking danger with its stand of eucalyptus to the right requiring a perfect drive to reach the green in two. Greenlife Golf Club is a nine hole Par-3 course of 1.142 metres. With narrow, well prepared fairways, the holes run from the shortest at 89 metres to the longest at 169 metres. The greens are large and offer a considerable variety of pin placings. The course is ideal for starters and expert golfers wishing to keep their eye in. The layout is well defined by its abundant vegetation including palm trees and oaks. Water features on the first and second holes and there is a river adjacent to the fifth and ninth.
