Five years ago, the owners of the Santa Maria Golf & Country Club began making plans to celebrate the (supposed) imminent opening of their new 18 hole golf course. The project was expected to be completed by now, but circumstances dictated otherwise.
So it was decided to go ahead anyway, and the inaugural President's Trophy competition duly took place on Saturday 20th October. And what a day it was!
A field of 98 players, comprising long-standing club members, members of the local press and golf tour operators were greeted with a goody bag containing a club polo shirt and many accessories, all with Sta. Maria's distinctive logo, a three masted galleon. The course was immaculate and the weather perfect, but even more was to come.
The players and their partners were invited in the evening to the Don Carlos hotel for cocktails, followed by the prize-giving ceremony and a sumptuous five course dinner. After a brief speech by the president, Don Abdulla Saudi, some magnificent trophies, which were replicas of the Santa Maria galleon, were presented.
