Friday 14th. December was REM radio's Telethon day in support of Cudeca, which raises more than 50,000 euros each year. Running in conjunction with the Telethon was a golf tournament at the popular Calanova Golf Club, followed by a presentation dinner at the splendid Bellini's restaurant. The cost, including green fee, buggy and dinner was a mere 95 euros and generous sponsors had provided many wonderful prizes. The event was advertised daily on REM's 104.6 fm radio band as well as on this page, so a field of 100+ was anticipated, as the package offered such superb value. Of the 95 euros, 20 euros was earmarked for Cudeca, so the promoters Golf Leisure Breaks, expected to present Cudeca with at least 2,000 euros. Imagine the disappointment when only 10 players managed to find the time and inclination to enter the CUDECA CHALLENGE TROPHY. Fortunately, Calanova's director Enrique Escudero generously allowed many of his staff to enter, each of whom contributed 20 euros to the kitty. The ten original entrants attended the dinner at Bellini's and were entertained by the popular entertainer Frankie Valentine, who also happened to feature among the prize winners. After the dinner, it was decided to auction some of the prizes (which outnumbered the players) and miraculously, these ten generous stalwarts managed to raise between them more than 800 euros, so that Golf Leisure Breaks were able to present Cudeca with 1,250 euros. Winners are shown elsewhere, but for the record, prizes included a weekend for two, including two rounds of golf, at the Antequera Golf Hotel, golf for two (including buggy) at Finca Cortesin, Santa Clara G.C., Arcos Gardens G.C., Benalup G.C., Costa Ballena G.C., Mijas International, Calanova G.C. El Chaparral G.C., Cabopino G.C., and Alhaurin G.C.. Other prizes included a Christmas hamper from Spainsburys, a case of Christmas goodies from Betterware, weekends for two at the PYR and Las Palmeras hotels in Fuengirola, dinners for two at Restaurant El Golf, Bellini's, Molino del Cura and El Molinon. Our thanks on behalf of Cudeca to all of these sponsors, and a special thanks to the Five Star Fairplay Golf Hotel, Benalup,, who contributed an "All-in" 2 night stay for two persons in a luxury suite, including two greenfees. This fetched 500 euros when auctioned at Bellini's on Friday evening. And a special thanks to those who did turn out at Calanova, ensuring that the day ended as a success. |
