Master Class at Augusta

The Masters features the world's very best golfers on a demanding course with impossibly fast greens, where downhill puts are a no-no, and the rough to be avoided at all cost.

Next to the Ryder Cup, the Masters tournament at the Augusta National course is the most charismatic golf tournament in the golf calendar. Following his success last weekend on Doral's "Blue Monster" course, his 13th. World Golf Championship victory from 24 starts, Tiger Woods will start as clear favourite to add this first Major of 2007 to his tally of 10 Major victories. Woods has become so dominant that he will probably pass Nicklaus' record of 18 Major titles well before his 40th. birthday. It has even been suggested in some quarters that he will win 20 majors and then retire from competitive golf to concentrate on running for presidency of the United States!

The Masters features the world's very best golfers on a demanding course with impossibly fast greens, where downhill puts are a no-no, and the rough to be avoided at all costs. Fortunately, the Augusta committee wants the tournament to be available to as large an audience as possible, awarding television rights to free-to-air channels, rather than subscription companies, so we will all be able to view the whole event on BBC television. The tournament begins on Thursday, 5th. April, but if you're unable to follow the whole four rounds, be sure to in front of your set for at least the final nine holes, when drama and suspense are guaranteed.
