Resort Golf
Most northern European countries
have emulated the British model
when it comes to setting up golf clubs.
That is to say, the majority of golf
courses have a permanent
membership and tend to be non-profit
making. Club golf is relatively
inexpensive, costing around 1,000€
annually for members, while visitors'
green fees are welcomed in order to
keep members' subs as low as
possible.
Resort golf on the other hand, is a
completely different animal. Resort
courses are strictly commercial and
designed to attract holiday golfers.
Even within world golf tourism, the
term resort golf has different
interpretations. To north Americans,
resort golf usually entails several golf
courses, usually half-a-dozen or more,
within a single complex comprising
one or two hotels and all the amenities
one would find in a small town. In
Europe however, where things tend
to be on a smaller scale, resort golf
simply means holiday golf, which is
to be found in golf destinations such
as our own Costa del Golf, where
there are more than 40 courses to
choose from, but each individually
managed.
One exception however, is the La
Cala Resort, which boasts 3 quality
golf courses, tennis courts, a 5* hotel,
and a magnificent clubhouse with it's
own gymnasium, squash courts and
swimming pool. The complex even
has a full size football pitch, which
attracts some top premiership football
clubs for an occasional break from a
hectic league programme.
The South course, opened in 1991,
was the first local course designed
by Cabell Robinson in his own right,
although as European director for
Robert Trent Jones, Cabell had
already established an enviable track
record. The North course soon
followed, thus enabling the club to
guarantee start times for it's members,
while continuing to attract more than
it's fair share of green fees. Of the
three courses, Europa is the latest
and is destined to be among the top
ten Costa del Golf courses when fully
matured.
The La Cala Resort manages to
produce a club-like ambience and a
friendly atmosphere, where members
and visitors mix freely. It is now
recognised as one of the leaders in the
local golf tourism industry and the most
popular golf complex on the coast.
Green fees are competitive, even more
so during the summer season (June to
mid September) and the new mid
season (December and January). The
next few weeks are traditionally the
busiest, so if you intend to sample the
delights of La Cala Resort, book now!
