COMPETITION - THE SPICE OF LIFE

Since 1995, Golf Leisure Breaks have organized approximately 3,000 stableford competitions, averaging four every week and involving more than 50,000 golfers during that period. The original concept was twofold; firstly to offer something more interesting than just a round of golf to tourists and residents alike and secondly, to provide for single golfers seeking a meaningful game with like-minded people. The fact that these competitions continue to attract about 100 golfers each week during the busy season and can still be successful during the hot summer months is testimony that many golfers still prefer the cutting edge that competitive golf can provide.

So what's the secret? The prizes are modest, but popular, as winners are rewarded with a nice trophy and an invitation to dine at a quality restaurant on the coast. This has often secured a single golfer brownie points from his wife and an extra "pass-out" to play in another competition! Because of this, the competitions do not attract badits and pot-hunters, who tend to protect false handicaps so that they can win Rolex watches and more valuable prizes. Consequently, just playing to a genuine handicap with a score of 36-37 points is often enough to win or finish in the top three.

This proves the old adage that taking part is more important than winning.

The longevity of the Golf Leisure Breaks competitions has resulted in the forging of many long-lasting friendships, as many regulars return again and again, knowing that they are assured of a game (all start times are reserved in advance throughout the year.

The success of these regular competitions depends entirely on a good working relationship with the host golf clubs, three of which, Sta. Maria, Parador and Greenlife, have welcomed us for many years, while Calanova G.C. have entertained us since the course opened in March 2006. These four clubs all recognize the need for co-operation and allow some leaway when it comes to finalizing the number of start times required.
