HIGH SOCIETY

There's no shortage of golf societies on the Costa del Sol - it seems that every other English bar runs a golf society. But most tend to be limited to one day at the same course each week, with the main object being to entice golfers to use the bar. There's nothing wrong with that - if it's a good bar, then it's good business for all concerned. But it is somewhat limited and it can become quite boring playing the same course each week. So Golf Leisure Breaks has decided to form the ultimate Golf Society.

GLB is already fortunate enough to have pre-booked start times the year round at 3 of the most popular courses on the coast, and at the lowest possible greenfees. Sta Maria (Mondays), Parador (Wednesdays) and Calanova (Fridays) provide completely different challenges to suit golfers of all abilities. So society members will always have a choice, or the chance to play all three or many of the other courses along the Coast. But a good golf society should offer much more than just a weekly game of golf. I was fortunate enough to be a founder member in 1984 of the WAGS, which is still going strong at the Mijas International Golf Club every Wednesday. A regular Wednesday fourball soon grew to the point where as many as 80 would turn up, most of whom were residents, so that in no time, a club atmosphere developed, along with a realistic handicapping system, since regular games soon revealed each member's real ability. So the main objective of the GLB Golf Society is to provide local golfers with regular competitive golf at the lowest possible greenfees and the opportunity to meet with friends old and new on a regular basis. There will be the usual sweepstake (for members only) while guests and tourists will be able to compete for some modest prizes.

But to make things even more interesting, there will be an annual championship, based on the best 10 competition scores, and occasional trips to other areas, such as the Costa de La Luz in Cádiz, Almeria and even the Algarve, all at specially reduced prices which Golf Leisure Breaks is able to command because of it's status as a specialist golf holiday organizer.
