A FINE PAIR
Last week, the La Cala Resort hosted the APG Valle Romano Spanish Pairs Championship. which was successfully defended by Miguel Angel Jiménez, partnered by Andrés Jiménez (no relation). Although entry is restricted to members of the Andalucian Golf Federation, the event attracted a very strong field, including some past and present European Tour players, such as Ignacio Garrido, Carlos Suneson, Diego Borrego, the father and son pairing of José María and Gabriel Cañizares and most of the Quiros family - father Juan and sons Raul and Daniel. Several of these are current tour players, but loyally elected to support this popular event, instead of travelling to Holland to compete for the 180,000€ top prize.
The Asia course (previously known as the south course) was the surprising choice for the tournament, which featured some excellent scoring, with the final day format scoring the combined total for each pairing. Although the Jiménez pairing secured the title with rounds of 66 & 69, the final day limelight was stolen by Patrick Fairweather with an excellent round of 63, elevating his team up to a joint 4th. finish.
The winning pair were rewarded for their efforts with cheques for 11,000 euros each.
All concerned were very complimentary about the fine condition of the course - especially the greens - and the organisation of the event. Our photo shows the winning team being presented with their trophies. |
